Day 1 - Fort William to Kinlochleven

Gentle James and his intrepid crew of hikers at the start of the West Highland Way.

The day dawned overcast and chilly as we geared up for our first day on the trail.  The first several yards was rather daunting (as in "OMGs, what I have I gotten myself into" level of daunting).  Uphill and kind of steep, with the road we were following taking us through several switchbacks (and some snow flurries) until we got off onto a rougher trail through an area of clear-cut timber and forested woodlands.  Then the trees opened up and we were surrounded by munros and some of the most incredible scenery I've gotten to experience up close.

This was my view during lunch.

There were several people out on the trail - mostly walkers, a runner, and a couple of (certifiably insane) cyclists.  The bulk of the trail was pretty rough.  Lots of gravel, larger rocks, shallow burns (streams) to cross (YAYYY for waterproof boots!), and sheep poop.  The wind picked up when we reached Lairig Moor, but it wasn't bad at all.

The hike today took me roughly about 7 hours (14 miles) - some jack-rabbited ahead, others were more leisurely in their approach.  Finally, the village of Kinlochleven came into view, and the steep, rocky descent to the Macdonald Hotel began.

After checking into the room and showering off the day's travails, beverages and a hearty dinner were inhaled (haggis, neeps and tatties for me - YUM).  Most of the crew are currently sitting in the hotel pub, socializing, playing billiards, and relaxing in front of the coal fire.  Bedtime is imminent - the Devil's Staircase and Glencoe are tomorrow.
